Windsor, England: Windsor Castle is at the centre of the UK’s largest security operation since the King’s coronation, as preparations intensify for a joint royal and presidential occasion during US President Donald Trump’s state visit. The measures are vast and, at times, reminiscent of American-style security operations.
Thames Valley Police are leading the operation, supported by officers from across the country, ensuring comprehensive coverage on land, water, and in the air.
Windsor is alive with law enforcement presence, as officers in fluorescent yellow jackets and traditional black-and-white flat caps swarm the town. Over the next several days, drones will monitor crowds, mounted units will patrol key areas, and boat patrols will secure the waterways.

A section of the River Thames bordering Windsor Castle will be closed off, while, for the first time in any state or royal event, the Long Walk leading up to the castle has been cordoned off with large white barricades to shield the residence from view. Airspace over the town is also restricted for the duration of the visit, enforced by police helicopters and drones.
Operational firearms commander Sergeant Dan Hatfield emphasized that authorities have been working in close coordination with the US Secret Service to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
“The residents of Windsor and visitors are used to a fairly high police presence, including armed officers. However, for this state visit, there will be an increase in numbers. My experience working with the Americans has been positive, and we work harmoniously to ensure safety,” Sergeant Hatfield added.
Security measures extend to marine operations as well. Sergeant Lyn Smith, head of the joint operations marine unit between Thames Valley and Hampshire Police, described this as the largest event she has ever worked on. Her team will conduct high-visibility patrols, specialist searches, and work with the Environment Agency to maintain a secure environment around the waterways.

Officers on the ground will be supported by vehicles carrying ballistic helmets, vests, and shields, ready to respond to any incidents. Police dogs, including Jack from Thames Valley Police, are actively performing security searches throughout the area.
Preparations account for potential risks heightened by recent events, including the fatal shooting of US activist Charlie Kirk, though authorities have not confirmed whether this specifically influenced security measures.
In addition to maintaining safety, authorities are managing public demonstrations. Thousands of protesters are expected in Windsor and central London, with the Stop Trump Coalition organizing rallies on both September 16 and 17. While a royal welcome will be extended, authorities are balancing ceremonial protocols with the need to safely manage demonstrators.
This security operation represents the most extensive deployment since the King’s coronation, highlighting meticulous planning across all possible scenarios to ensure the royal and presidential visit proceeds smoothly and securely, both on land and waterways, and in the air.
