New York: Democrat Tim Walz and Republican JD Vance have met for their Vice-presidential debate in New York City. During a critical moment for the 2024 race, VP debates are often regarded as a sideshow to the presidential contest, this year’s event holds greater value in a race that could be decided by a small margin in key battlefield states.

Both men bring opposing backgrounds and political ideologies to the debate stage. Vance, a 40-year-old U.S. Senator from Ohio and a close ally of Donald Trump illustrates the populist wing of the Republican Party. His focus on trade, immigration, and economic nationalism aligns closely with Trump’s platform, and he has performed to connect with disaffected voters in rural parts of the industrial Midwest.

Walz, the governor of Minnesota, emerged as Kamala Harris’ vice-presidential pick after Joe Biden opted not to run for re-election. Known for his relatable, folksy style and ability to appeal to moderate voters, Walz conveys a plainspoken Midwestern sensibility to the Democratic ticket. He has concentrated on education, rural outreach, and issues like healthcare and abortion rights.

    Vance’s rise as Trump’s pick

Vance’s selection as Trump’s running mate in July came on the heels of Trump’s near-assassination, with the former president riding high in the polls. Vance, with his working-class Appalachian roots, has been a regular presence in battleground states, discoursing issues of trade and immigration to galvanise support among white, working-class voters.

His messaging on these issues has echoed with many Trump supporters, although his tendency to stoke controversy – including spreading false rumours about Haitian migrants in Ohio – could be a target for Walz during the debate.

    Walz’s appeal to swing voters

On the Democratic side, Walz has travelled extensively to rural areas in battleground states, striving to win over conservative-leaning voters that Harris might otherwise struggle to reach. At a recent rally in Philadelphia, Harris introduced Walz as “Coach Walz,” playing up his stage as a high school football coach and educator. The Democrats are banking on his down-to-earth style to help bridge the urban-rural divide and peel away some Republican votes.

Walz has also positioned himself as a defender of personal freedom and moderate policies, drawing a contrast to Vance’s more hardline stances on social issues.

    Debate strategy and potential clashes

The debate is predicted to feature sharp exchanges on the economy, crime, and immigration. Vance is likely to strike Walz on his handling of protests in Minnesota following George Floyd’s death and criticise his liberal policies as governor, particularly around transgender rights. Walz is expected to contrast by pointing to Vance’s controversial statements and connections to far-right political figures, as well as highlighting Democratic strengths in healthcare, environmental policy, and abortion rights.

With no further presidential debates scheduled this year, the event will be a critical option for both men to make their case to undecided voters. Vance will look to harden support among Trump’s base, while Walz seeks to introduce himself to a broader audience and court moderates.

As Election Day approaches, the stakes are high for both campaigns. The vice-presidential debate could play a pivotal role in shaping the final phase of the race.
