London: Vibe coding has been announced as the Word of the Year 2025 by Collins Dictionary, highlighting the growing influence of artificial intelligence in everyday language and technology.

The term, coined earlier this year by Andrej Karpathy, former Tesla AI director and founding engineer at OpenAI, describes a new way of creating software, not by typing lines of code, but by simply describing what the software should do.

According to Collins, the choice reflects a broader cultural shift in how humans communicate with machines. Instead of learning programming syntax, users can now ‘vibe code’ by telling an AI system what they want, for example, an app that tracks expenses or a website that books appointments. The AI then generates the code automatically, drastically reducing development time and lowering barriers for beginners.

Tech experts say the rise of vibe coding has transformed how people view programming, making it more intuitive and conversational. Supporters believe this trend will democratise software creation, enabling anyone to design digital tools without technical expertise. It also signals how AI continues to shape not just technology but the language we use to describe it.

However, some analysts have warned that this approach could lead to challenges in debugging and maintaining AI-generated code. Without human oversight, errors or vulnerabilities might go unnoticed. Despite such concerns, Collins’ selection of vibe coding underscores how quickly AI innovation is reshaping both technology and communication.

The inclusion of the term in Collins Dictionary confirms that vibe coding has moved from tech jargon to mainstream vocabulary, reflecting the merging of creativity, accessibility, and artificial intelligence in the modern digital world.
