United States: United States President Mr. Joe Biden was interviewed voluntarily as part of investigating the classified documents found at his home and former private office.
“The 80-year-old president was interviewed by Special Counsel Mr. Robert Hur over two days, concluding on Monday,” Mr. Ian Sams, a spokesperson for the White House counsel’s office, shared.
In January 2023, the US Attorney General appointed a special counsel to investigate the handling of the secret files, which date from Mr. Biden’s time as Vice President under President Mr. Barack Obama and immediately afterwards.
The special counsels are appointed to handle sensitive cases involving political figures or allegations of serious wrongdoing by the government and have more independence than usual federal investigators over deciding whether to bring charges.
“As we have said from the beginning, the President and the White House are cooperating with this investigation, and as it has been appropriate, we have provided relevant updates publicly, being as transparent as we can consistent with protecting and preserving the integrity of the investigation,” Mr. Sams said in a statement.
Former President Mr. Donald Trump, who is also Mr. Biden’s probable Republican opponent in the 2024 presidential election, separately faces trial over the alleged mishandling of classified documents after leaving office. The special counsel in that case, Mr. Jack Smith, said that Mr. Trump allegedly took classified documents to his Mar-A-Lago estate in Florida and refused to return them.
