Washington: The US Senate has given its consent to a $95 billion (£76 billion) foreign aid package that provides military assistance to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. President Joe Biden is foreseen to inscribe the ruling into law.
The Senate recently supported the bill that was previously passed by the US House of Representatives. The package includes $61 billion in military support for Ukraine, which the Pentagon says can be produced for the war-torn country ‘within days.’ It was enacted with bipartisan authorisation by a vote of 79-18.
President Biden praised the passage of the ruling in a statement, noting that it is a crucial rule that will drive the country and the world more protected as it stands by its friends who are safeguarding themselves against terrorists like Hamas and tyrants like Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The Democratic Senate Majority Leader, Chuck Schumer, expressed that the United States demonstrated that it would not abandon its allies. Schumer said that, “After more than six months of hard work and many twists and turns in the road, America sends a message to the entire world; we will not turn our back on you.”
The Senate approved a similar aid package for Ukraine in February. However, a bunch of conservatives who were against providing new aid prevented the bill from being voted on in the House of Representatives. Last week, Democrats and Republicans in the House of Representatives came along to evade this resistance.
They consented to the package that contained foreign aid, a ruling to seize Russian assets held by Western banks, new embargoes on Russia, Iran, and China, and a condition that would require the Chinese company ByteDance to sell TikTok, the popular social media service.
According to Schumer, Republican Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, performed admirably when he advocated for the passage of the foreign aid bill in the House. “It was our bipartisanship, our linking of arms together that got this large and difficult bill through the Congress, despite many political ideologies, who wanted to bring it down,” he added.
However, a majority of Republicans in the chamber voted against the package. Among them, fifteen senators voted against the bill, along with two Democrats and independent Senator Bernie Sanders. Senator Sanders was against supplying new abhorrent arms to Israel. Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville mentioned that offering more funds into Ukraine’s coffers would only extend the brawl and cause more loss of life.
The Biden government reported that US aid that was consented to for Ukraine earlier was depleted since the start of the current year. Administrators cautioned that the crisis is alarming and Ukraine is at risk of losing its ongoing two-year-old warfare with Russia unless new support is sanctioned by Congress.
