Paris: Two years ago, after winning his fourth NBA title, Stephen Curry set his sights on an Olympic gold medal. On Saturday night in Paris, he made it happen.
The United States reclaimed the top spot in international men’s basketball, with Curry scoring 24 points in a 98-87 victory over France in the Olympic final. This win marks the U.S.’ fifth consecutive gold medal and 17th in 20 Olympic appearances.
Curry sank four three-pointers in the final 2:43, including one with 1:19 remaining that put the U.S. up 93-84. He celebrated by shaking his jersey, showcasing the “USA” emblem. He added another three-pointer 30 seconds later, finishing with his signature “go to sleep” gesture.
Kevin Durant, the first four-time men’s gold medallist in Olympic basketball, and Devin Booker each scored 15 points. LeBron James, in gold shoes, added 14 points, earning his third gold medal.
For the second Olympics in a row, France had to watch the U.S. celebrate after the final whistle. The French lost to the U.S. 87-82 in Tokyo three years ago, and this match remained tight until Curry took charge in the final minutes.
Victor Wembanyama led France with 26 points in his first Olympic final, while Guerschon Yabusele added 20 points.
The U.S. led by 14 early in the third quarter, but the offence stalled. A three-pointer by Evan Fournier with 3:05 left in the quarter cut the U.S. lead to 65-59. A turnover by Anthony Edwards and Durant allowed France to reduce the lead further, ending the quarter at 72-66.
