United States: US Secretary of State, Mr. Antony Blinken, will visit the Middle East this week to discuss multiple issues in the region.
Mr. Blinken will travel to Belgium, North Macedonia, Israel, the West Bank, and the UAE, the US State Department said in a statement.
This is Blinken’s third trip to Israel following Hamas launched an attack on southern Israel on October 7.
In Israel and the West Bank, Mr. Blinken will discuss Israel’s right to defend itself consistent with international humanitarian law, as well as continued efforts to secure the release of all hostages and protect civilian life during Israel’s operations in Gaza.
In addition, Mr. Blinken will hold meetings with counterparts on regional issues, including the conflict between Israel and Hamas. According to statements, the Secretary will also discuss the principles he outlined in Tokyo on November 8.
Israel has agreed to pauses in its military operations in exchange for the gradual release of hostages taken by Hamas during its early October attacks on Israel. The agreement had been due to expire on the last day but, it was extended for two more days.
“Good to see more hostages released today including a young American girl who turned four just days ago. Our efforts will continue until all hostages are set free,” Mr. Blinken wrote on X.
White House National Security Council spokesman, Mr. John Kirby, stated that the US expects to see the pause extended further, but it is dependent on Hamas continuing to release hostages.
Finally, Mr. Blinken will travel to Dubai to attend the UN Climate Conference, COP28, where he will engage leaders on the need to continue global action to address the climate crisis.
