United States: Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic has won his 24th Grand Slam title in the US Open final. The player defeated Russian player Daniil Medvedev.
The 36-year-old player made history by winning his 24th major singles title in the Open Era. This achievement moved him ahead of Serena Williams, making him the first player to achieve this milestone.
Djokovic is now the first player to achieve this milestone since the Open Era began in 1968. It’s worth noting that Margaret Court also had 24 titles, but 13 of hers were won before professionals were allowed to participate in Slam events, as per the statement.
“Novak Djokovic handled the weight of history to defeat Daniil Medvedev on Sunday,” US Open Tennis wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
There were moments, especially during the challenging one-hour and 44-minute second set, where Djokovic seemed to struggle. After enduring some exhausting rallies, he would lean over with his hands on his knees, use his racket for support, or take a moment to stretch his legs.
This victory over Medvedev, the same opponent who defeated him in the 2021 final at Flushing Meadows, preventing his quest for the first calendar-year Grand Slam in over 50 years, also made Djokovic the oldest male champion in the US Open’s Open Era.
Djokovic’s fourth New York championship, which he missed last year due to his unvaccinated status against COVID-19, adds to his impressive collection of 10 Australian Open titles, 7 Wimbledon victories, and 3 French Open wins. This further solidifies his position as the leader on the men’s Grand Slam title list.
