United States: A secret US government spacecraft has taken off on a classified mission atop the world’s strongest rockets. On a SpaceX Falcon Heavy, the X-37B craft was launched from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
The most recent mission it was on was in 2020, but it has been on six other missions since 2010. The rocket that was used on Thursday can send it farther into space than it has ever been.
This little spacecraft, which is about the size of a bus and looks like a miniature space shuttle, was built by Boeing and has, up to this point, only flown in Earth’s lower orbit, which is less than 1,200 miles across.
However, Falcon Heavy, which consists of three interconnected rocket cores, can transport much larger payloads over 22,000 miles above Earth.
This has given rise to the conjecture that X-37B may be headed toward the orbit of more distant planets, like Mars.
The mission, which is being carried out by the US Space Force as part of the military’s National Security Space Launch program, has not been extensively publicised.
Designed to carry out space experiments, -37B will test “new orbital regimes, experimenting with future space domain awareness technologies” during this mission.”
A NASA study that looks at the effects of prolonged exposure to extreme space radiation on plant seeds in preparation for potential long-term human missions to the moon and Mars is one of its outlined tasks. When X-37B’s mission is over, it should return to Earth and land on a runway, just like an aeroplane would, as per the statement.
