New York, UN Headquarters: The United Nations General Assembly vote has drawn strong reactions from both Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA), showcasing the deep division over the ongoing dispute in Gaza and the West Bank.

    Israel’s Response

Israel’s Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, damned the vote, calling it “a shameful decision that backs the Palestinian Authority’s diplomatic terrorism.” Danon disapproved of the UN for what he sees as an inappropriate focus, given the current hostilities, particularly the October 7 attack by Hamas.

Danny Danon commented that, “Instead of pointing to the anniversary of the October 7 massacre by condemning Hamas and calling for the release of all 101 of the remaining hostages, the General Assembly continues to dance to the music of the Palestinian Authority, which backs the Hamas murderers.”

    Palestinian Authority’s Reaction

Meanwhile, PA President Mahmoud Abbas greeted the UN’s resolution, hailing it as a step forward for the Palestinian cause. Abbas urged the international community to press Israel to comply with the terms outlined in the resolution, framing it as a beacon of faith for the Palestinian people.

Abbas added in a statement that, “The international agreement over this resolution renews the hopes of our Palestinian people who are facing a comprehensive aggression in Gaza and the West Bank, including Jerusalem attaining its aspirations of freedom and independence and pioneering a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.”

The contrasting reaction from the Israeli and Palestinian leadership further underscores the complexities of the ongoing conflict, which has escalated in recent months. The UN’s decision has elevated tensions, with both sides looking to the international community for support in shaping the next era of the conflict.
