United States: The devastating toll on civilian lives and the ensuing humanitarian consequences have reached alarming levels, according to the United Nations amidst ongoing armed conflicts worldwide. Shockingly, the UN has reported a staggering surge in recorded deaths, with nearly 17,000 civilian casualties in conflict zones last year alone. Notably, Ukraine experienced a tragic loss of nearly 8,000 lives, highlighting the severity of the situation.
This distressing data reveals a distressing 53 percent increase in civilian killings compared to the previous year, emphasizing the urgent need for concerted efforts to mitigate the impact of armed conflicts and protect innocent lives.
UN Secretary-General Mr. Antonio Guterres delivered a sobering message on 23rd May 2023, emphasizing that the international community is falling short in its duty to protect civilians. He highlighted the significant loss of life in the war-torn regions of Ukraine and Sudan, the destruction of schools in Ethiopia, and the damage inflicted upon water infrastructure in Syria. Mr. Guterres’ statement serves as a stark reminder of the pressing need for global efforts to prioritize the safety and well-being of civilian populations affected by conflicts worldwide.
A recently released UN report on the protection of civilians in conflicts during 2022 has unveiled alarming statistics, with a sharp 53 percent rise in UN-recorded civilian deaths and a significant surge in the number of individuals forcibly displaced by ongoing conflicts. The report further reveals a distressing milestone, as the global count of refugees compelled to leave their homes due to conflict, violence, human rights violations, and persecution has surpassed a staggering 100 million, as highlighted by the UN Secretary-General.
During a United Nations Security Council meeting, Mr. Guterres, alongside Russia’s Ambassador to the UN, Mr. Vasily Nebenzya, highlighted the concerning findings of the UN’s research on the treatment of civilians in war zones. The research revealed that over 117 million people are currently facing acute hunger primarily due to the impacts of war and insecurity.
Notably, in Ukraine, which has been grappling with Russia’s invasion for over a year, the UN recorded nearly 8,000 civilian deaths and over 12,500 injuries, although the actual figures are believed to be significantly higher. The Security Council meeting witnessed a tense exchange of condemnation between Ukraine’s Western supporters and Russia, a recurring dynamic seen since Moscow’s invasion of its neighbouring country. French Ambassador to the UN, Mr. Nicolas de Riviere, specifically pointed out alleged human rights violations by Russia in Ukraine, as well as by the Russian mercenary Wagner force in the Central African Republic and Mali.
