Kyiv, Ukraine: Ukrainian forces have advanced up to 15 miles into Russia’s Kursk region, according to the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), which reports that Ukrainian troops are capitalizing on Russian disarray and disorganization.

In an update on X, the British MoD stated that Russia’s defensive lines in Kursk were unprepared for a multi-battalion assault. Ukrainian forces have penetrated the region to a depth of 10 to 25 kilometers (six to 15 miles) across a 40-kilometer front.

Despite established defensive lines and border fences, Russia was not ready to respond to such a large-scale assault. Since launching the incursion on August 6, Ukraine has taken hundreds of square miles of Kursk, using British-supplied tanks.

To slow the Ukrainian advance, Russia has reportedly transferred several thousand troops from the northeastern front in Ukraine, according to U.S. officials. The MoD added that Moscow is constructing additional defensive positions to halt the Ukrainian attack.

Russian President Vladimir Putin chaired a security council meeting in Moscow to address the incursion into Kursk. He mentioned the focus on “new technical solutions” in the military operation.

Meanwhile, in the eastern Ukrainian town of Pokrovsk, military authorities urged civilians to expedite their evacuation as Russian forces advance rapidly. Authorities warned on Telegram that time is running out to leave for safer regions. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Pokrovsk and nearby towns in Donetsk are facing intense Russian assaults.

Zelensky emphasized that priority supplies are being sent to the affected areas. Mykhailo Podolyak, a Ukrainian presidential adviser, said the incursion into Kursk aims to push Russia toward fair peace talks. Ukraine, he noted, has no interest in occupying Kursk but needs to force Russia into negotiations on Kyiv’s terms.

To stabilize the situation in Kursk, Russia is moving thousands of troops from northeastern Ukraine, according to multiple U.S. officials. John Kirby, a spokesperson for the U.S. National Security Council, confirmed that Russia is diverting resources to counter Ukraine’s actions in the region.
