Bürgenstock, (Switzerland): The two-day Ukraine peace summit (Summit on peace in Ukraine) concluded with a call for a peace agreement with Russia that respects Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
Over 90 countries participated in the summit, but several nations with close ties to Russia, including India, Indonesia, Mexico, Thailand, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, abstained from signing the joint statement. Brazil, which attended the summit as an observer, also did not endorse the statement. In total, 78 countries signed the declaration.
The joint statement called for the return of control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant to Ukraine and an end to attacks on ports and ships. The summit took place in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, on June 15 and 16. Russia was not invited to the event, and although Ukraine invited China, they did not send a representative. However, Ukraine found solace in Turkey, a key trading partner of Russia, signing the statement.
“It is unfortunate that some still attempt to ‘balance’ the situation,” said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He added that Ukraine is ready for discussions as soon as Russian troops withdraw from Ukrainian territory.
It is noteworthy that UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak personally attended the summit, demonstrating the UK’s commitment to supporting Ukraine and finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
