Ukraine: Amid rising concerns about safety at Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Russia has fired numerous missiles and drones towards Kyiv and other cities in Ukraine. The attack has resulted in injuries to at least five people.

According to Ukraine’s top military officials, they have successfully destroyed all 35 Shahed drones that were launched during the night. These drones were reportedly made in Iran. Additionally, Ukraine’s military command has stated that Russia has fired multiple missiles as well.

In its daily update, the General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces has reported that there are civilian casualties, both dead and injured and that several civilian infrastructures such as high-rise buildings and private homes have been damaged.

The recent aerial attack coincides with Moscow’s upcoming celebration of Victory Day, a significant holiday in Russia that commemorates the country’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. Typically, the holiday features a military parade through Red Square.

Kyiv Mayor Mr. Vitali Klitschko has reported that at least five individuals were injured as a result of the recent air attacks on the capital. Meanwhile, a warehouse in Odesa, filled with food, was set ablaze by Russian missiles. Reports of explosions have also emerged from other regions across Ukraine.

The top Ukrainian general in charge of Bakhmut’s defence has stated that Russia has escalated its shelling of the already devastated city. This move is believed to be an attempt by Russia to solidify its gains ahead of the 9th May 2023 holiday. Bakhmut, which was once a prominent salt-mining town, is viewed by the Russian military as a crucial target to secure its eastward advance.
