Edinburgh: The outdoor celebrations of Edinburgh, Hogmanay Festival have been canceled due to UK weather, with severe conditions including wind, rain, and snow expected across the country.
The Met Office has issued eight weather warnings for the coming days, forecasting stormy conditions with wind gusts reaching up to 70mph (112km/h) in some areas. An amber warning for rain is in place for parts of Scotland, along with flood alerts and even a rare severe across the nation.
Due to the weather, Edinburgh’s street party, fireworks display, and outdoor concert headlined by Texas were canceled on public safety grounds after the Met Office issued yellow warnings for wind and rain. However, indoor events, such as a candlelit concert at St Giles’ Cathedral, are still scheduled to go ahead.
Unique Assembly, which runs the world-renowned Hogmanay festival on behalf of the City of Edinburgh Council, made the “difficult decision” for safety reasons.
Festival director Al Thomson expressed the team’s disappointment, stating that the weather had prevented them from constructing necessary infrastructure and for the event.
The traditional Torchlight Procession, which typically kicks off the celebrations, was already canceled earlier due to strong wind gusts.

The decision has left many, including American tourist Richard Newton, heartbroken. Newton, who traveled over 4,000 miles from Atlanta with his family, expressed his frustration, noting they had been planning the trip for five years and had spent significant savings to attend.
The weather is also impacting other regions. In Blackpool, the annual New Year’s Eve seaside fireworks display has been canceled due to the expected winds, while London is closely monitoring the forecast ahead of its sold-out fireworks event.
In Scotland, a severe flood warning of “danger to life” has been issued for parts of northern Scotland, including Aviemore and surrounding areas, as river flooding is expected on Tuesday morning.
The rest of the UK will experience unsettled conditions through New Year’s Eve and Day, with heavy rain in England, Northern Ireland, and Wales.
Wind gusts of up to 43mph are expected in London as the new year approaches, and temperatures are expected to fall below freezing across much of the country.
