United Kingdom: Victoria Prentis, the Attorney General of the UK, has promised to help Ukraine in their pursuit of compensation for the damage caused by Russia’s illegal invasion. Prentis made this statement while attending an event in The Hague.

The Attorney General attended the ‘Restoring Justice for Ukraine’ conference, where she represented the UK at a ministerial session of the Conference of Parties of the Register of Damages for Ukraine. The purpose of the Register is to keep a record of the damage, loss or injury that ordinary Ukrainians suffered as a result of Russian aggression.

The UK showed support for the Register, which was opened for claims submissions at the conference. Victoria Prentis also reaffirmed assistance for Ukraine’s purpose of accountability for Russian horribleness.

Prentis said in her statement that, “Since Russia’s barbaric invasion over two years ago, there has been extensive and profound damage inflicted on Ukrainian buildings and vital infrastructure. The UK is fully committed to helping secure accountability for Ukraine and the Register of Damages scheme, which will act as an important mechanism to document this brutal conflict.”

Since its establishment in May 2023, 43 countries and the European Union, including the UK, joined the Register of Damages. The Attorney General spoke at the conference about the UK’s national intervention during the Ministerial Dialogue, which handled wider accountability problems. During this section of the event, she reaffirmed the UK’s adherence to supporting Ukraine and guaranteeing that Russia is held fully accountable for its illicit invasion.

The UK Attorney underlined the part of the Atrocity Crimes Advisory Group at a conference in the Netherlands, Ukraine, and the European Commission. The group assists Ukraine in prosecuting crimes committed during Russia’s illegal invasion. The Attorney also met with Ukrainian Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin and the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Karim Khan KC.
