Liverpool: Police across the UK are on high alert this weekend as anti-racism protests continue nationwide. In Northern Ireland, a mosque in Newtownards, County Down, was attacked with a petrol bomb in what police are calling a “racially motivated” incident.
Councillor Expresses Anger
Newcastle City Council leader, Nick Kemp, voiced his frustration that some residents felt unsafe due to the actions of “right-wing agitators.” Kemp praised Northumbria Police for their effective preparations and swift actions, which helped prevent violence during the protests organised by Enough Is Enough. He stressed the importance of unity in the face of attempts to sow division and hatred in the city.
Hundreds Arrested
The National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) reported that 779 people have been arrested in connection with the riots, with 349 already charged. Among those appearing in court is Lucy Connolly, the wife of a Tory councillor, accused of inciting racial hatred through written material.
Chief Constable Chris Haward, leading the NPCC’s efforts against serious and organised crime, emphasised that the unrest was fuelled by misinformation spread by so-called influencers, exploiting public grief following the tragic deaths of three young girls in Southport. These influencers, according to Haward, incited violence and hatred from the safety of their homes.
Liverpool Enforces Dispersal Order
A dispersal order has been enforced in Liverpool city centre, covering parts of Everton, Kensington, Vauxhall, and Kirkdale, following incidents of disorder. Merseyside Police also implemented a Section 60 order, granting officers enhanced stop-and-search powers to maintain public safety.
Inspector Chris Taylor of Merseyside Police stated that these orders would allow officers to disperse those suspected of planning or engaging in criminal activities. The orders will remain in place for 48 hours, supported by increased police patrols.
Impact on the Judicial System
Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood warned that the impact of the riots on the judicial system could be felt for years. Writing in The Observer, Mahmood noted that while the courts have acted swiftly to address the disorder, the challenges have been exacerbated by existing issues within the justice system, including record backlogs and overcrowded prisons.
Charges Filed
Cleveland Police have charged four men in connection with last week’s riots in Hartlepool and Middlesbrough. The charges range from burglary and violent disorder to assaulting an emergency worker. All four men have been remanded in custody, with court appearances scheduled for Monday.
Tribute to the Victim
The parents of six-year-old Bebe King, one of the victims of the Southport stabbings, have paid tribute to their “precious daughter” in a statement released by Merseyside Police. They revealed that Bebe’s older sister witnessed the attack and managed to escape, showing “incredible strength and courage.”
