London: UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has urged Russia to take immediate steps to end the ongoing war in Ukraine, emphasizing that the power to halt the conflict lies in the hands of the Russian leadership. In a recent statement, the Prime Minister called on President Vladimir Putin to cease hostilities and engage in diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis.

Prime Minister said that, “Russia can end this war today. The choice is clear, halt the aggression and bring peace to Ukraine, it is their direct participation and of course, this substantially changes the very essence, the nature of the conflict.”

    Putin’s Warning to the West

In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a stark warning to Western countries, accusing them of escalating tensions through continued military aid to Ukraine. Speaking at a recent press conference, Putin claimed that the West’s involvement in the conflict is prolonging the war and threatened “serious consequences” if foreign powers persist in their support for Kyiv.

Putin stated that, “The West must understand that their actions have consequences. By fuelling this war with arms and support, they are pushing us toward a dangerous escalation.”

The war, which began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, continues to rage despite numerous diplomatic efforts to broker a ceasefire. The conflict has caused widespread destruction, significant civilian casualties, and a growing humanitarian crisis. Despite international sanctions and condemnation, Putin has shown little sign of backing down.

Meanwhile, Western leaders have reaffirmed their support for Ukraine, stressing that the country has the right to defend itself against Russian aggression. The standoff between Russia and NATO-aligned countries has only intensified in recent months, with no clear end in sight.

Sir Keir is in Washington for talks with US President Joe Biden, as allies of Kyiv discuss giving Ukraine permission to fire their missiles at targets inside Russia.
