United Kingdom: Millions of people will cast ballots in the general election of 2024 today. Polling places, which are located in areas of neighborhood community centers and schools, will be open from 7:00 until 22:00 BST.
There are around 40,000 polling stations and about 46 million eligible voters for the 650 members of the House of Commons.
Voter ID is now mandatory for the first general election following the introduction of new regulations in 2023. Voters can use any of the available forms of identification, such as a passport or driver’s license.
Every constituency, or area, will have its results announced throughout the night and into Friday morning. To create a majority government, political parties need to win 326 seats or more than half of the total seats.
Sitting Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called the election in May, and it is being held under new constituency lines as a result of a planned study that considered demographic shifts.
Based on voter registration data, the revised boundaries have resulted in England gaining 10 more Members of Parliament, for a total of 543 members.
Scotland now has 57 seats overall, down from 59 in Wales, where there have been eight reductions to 32 seats. There are 18 in Northern Ireland.
As long as they are registered to vote and a citizens of the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth, or the Republic of Ireland, they may vote at any age. The deadline for registration was June 18th.
A legal amendment in 2022 made it possible for about two million British nationals who have been residing overseas for more than 15 years to register as voters.
