United Kingdom: The Government of the United Kingdom has announced providing more than £117 million in protective security funding to UK Muslims over the next 4 years.
The government made up to £29.4 million available this year, which included an increase of £4.9 million after the occurrences in Israel since the Hamas attack. The Prime Minister committed to delivering over £70 million to the Community Security Trust over the next four years, as part of the Jewish Community Protective Security Grant.
This allowance will be used to enhance security measures at various locations throughout the country, including schools, synagogues and other facilities used by the Jewish community. The aim is to ensure the safety and protection of these areas against any potential threats or attacks.
During the ongoing Israel-Hamas dispute and current occurrences in the Middle East, some people were provoked with unjustifiable enmity towards both faith groups. The declaration outlines a long-term package of consent to ensure anti-Muslim abuse, intimidation, harassment, or other hate crimes won’t be tolerated.
This allocation will deliver protection measures including the installation of technologies such as CCTV, alarm systems, and secure perimeter fences at mosques, Muslim community centres, and Muslim faith schools. Furthermore, the government continues to invite mosques and Muslim faith community centres to register for protective security measures as part of its Protective Security Scheme for Mosques.
UK Home Secretary James Cleverly said that, “Anti-Muslim hatred has absolutely no place in our society. We will not let events in the Middle East be used as an excuse to justify abuse against British Muslims. The Prime Minister has made clear that we stand with Muslims in the UK. That is exactly why we have committed to this funding, giving reassurance and confidence to UK Muslims at a time when it is crucially needed.”
The Security Minister of the UK, Tom Tugendhat stated that, “This funding demonstrates that this government stands firmly against hate crimes, abuse, threats or harassment against British Muslims. We continue to work closely with policing and community partners to ensure the safety and security of British Muslims.”
There were recent reports of anti-Muslim and anti-Semitic incidents condemned by the government. According to ministers, they expect the police to scrutinise hate offences and work with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
