Houston: Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has enlisted Tulsi Gabbard, a former Democrat and fellow Indian-American, to challenge Vice President Kamala Harris. Gabbard, a former Democratic congresswoman and prominent Hindu-American leader, has been recruited to bolster Trump’s attacks on Harris in their forthcoming debate.
According to a report by The New York Times, citing two sources familiar with Trump’s schedule, Gabbard has been actively involved in Trump’s debate preparation sessions at his private club and residence in Mar-a-Lago. The debate between Trump and Harris is scheduled for 10th September, hosted by ABC News. Gabbard, who departed from the Democratic Party after the 2020 presidential election, has since become a notable figure within Trump’s circle and was even considered as a potential running mate.
Gabbard is widely recognised for her impactful performance in the 2019 Democratic presidential primary debates, where she delivered a notable blow to Kamala Harris. This experience is regarded as a significant factor in her inclusion in Trump’s debate preparation.
Trump’s spokesperson, Caroline Levitt, confirmed Gabbard’s participation in an email, as reported by The New York Times. Trump’s supporters assert that he is one of the most skilled debaters in U.S political history, pointing to his previous performances against Joe Biden as evidence.
The New York Times also reported that during his June debate preparation against Biden, Trump primarily engaged in informal sessions with advisors, avoiding formal preparation. In more structured sessions at Mar-a-Lago, his aides took on the roles of moderators, sitting across from him in anticipation of the debate.
Trump’s perceived loss to Biden in the June debate is cited as one of the reasons behind Biden’s subsequent withdrawal. Preparations for the upcoming debate with Kamala Harris on 10th September are reportedly being managed by Trump’s aides.
