United States: Former US President Donald Trump solidified his path to a third consecutive Republican presidential nomination after defeating Nikki Haley in the GOP primary in New Hampshire.
Following months of intense campaigning in the state, Nikki Haley, the former governor of South Carolina, finished second in the Republican primary. Trump won by a double-digit margin over Haley, earning his second clear-cut triumph following the Iowa caucuses one week prior.
In Iowa’s caucuses last week, the former president prevailed handily. A few days later, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis abruptly withdrew from the Republican race, leaving Haley as Trump’s sole opponent.
Haley conceded the New Hampshire race and congratulated Trump on his victory on Tuesday night at an election night party in Concord.
But she promised to return home to South Carolina, her home state as governor, to pursue her candidacy as the Republican party’s nominee for president.
In the Democratic primary, President Joe Biden prevailed as a write-in candidate in New Hampshire. After an internal party fight over the primary’s date, Biden, who is virtually certain to be his party’s nominee, did not appear on the ballot. Nevertheless, a state campaign was launched to write in his honor.
No delegates will be awarded. Now expert analysis states a possibility for a rematch between Biden and Trump.
