United States: President-elect Donald Trump has announced the nomination of businessman Warren Stephens to serve as the United States ambassador to the United Kingdom.

In a statement on Truth Social, Trump expressed his enthusiasm, saying that, “Warren has always dreamed of serving the United States full time. I am thrilled that he will now have that possibility as the top diplomat, representing the USA to one of America’s most cherished and beloved allies.”

Stephens, the CEO of Arkansas-based investment bank Stephens Inc., has been a major donor to Trump’s political campaigns, contributing millions to his re-election efforts. If confirmed, he will play a crucial part in strengthening the historic “special relationship” between the US and the UK, which includes close military, intelligence, and cultural ties.

The position of US ambassador to the UK is one of the most prestigious diplomatic roles, often granted to prominent political supporters. During Trump’s first term, the ambassador position was filled by Woody Johnson, a top Republican donor and owner of the New York Jets. Similarly, former President Barack Obama designated Louis Susman, a longtime Democratic fundraiser, to the post.

Stephens, however, has not always been a Trump ally. In 2016, he donated approximately $4 million to political groups striving to block Trump’s presidential bid. Stephens also supported former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley’s 2024 presidential campaign, donating over $2 million to a PAC backing her candidacy. Despite this, Stephens has since thrown his support behind Trump, donating to Republican groups and US Senate candidates in 2024.

In response to his nomination, Stephens expressed his gratitude, stating that, “I have expressed to President Trump that I would be incredibly proud to serve our country and his administration, working to implement the President’s agenda and further bolster the long-standing alliance between the United States and the United Kingdom.”

Stephens, alongside his wife, is also known for their philanthropic work through the Harriet and Warren Stephens Family Foundation, which has donated to various institutions, including the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts and the University of Mississippi.
