Washington: Donald Trump has called on Microsoft to terminate Lisa Monaco, who serves as the company’s global affairs president, citing concerns about US national security.
Monaco, who worked in the administrations of Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden, began the role at Microsoft in July to oversee the firm’s global government engagements.
Monaco had coordinated the Justice Department’s response to the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol. Security clearances were revoked in February, and Trump stated that the US government has also banned Monaco from federal properties due to ‘Monaco’s many wrongful acts.’
The demand comes one day after former FBI Director James Comey was indicted on charges of false statements and obstruction of a congressional proceeding. Trump has indicated that more indictments against perceived political adversaries may follow.

Since returning to office in January, Trump has taken actions affecting law firms, universities, and prosecutors linked to investigations against the administration. The administration has also intervened in corporate matters, including pressuring Intel’s CEO and influencing Disney’s ABC operations.
Microsoft and other tech firms have attempted to maintain favourable relations with Trump during the second term. CEO Satya Nadella attended a White House dinner with Trump and other technology executives.
Trump has previously criticised alleged conservative bias in the tech industry. The current call for Monaco’s dismissal reflects ongoing tensions between the US government and corporate America during Trump’s tenure. Microsoft has not provided a comment, and Monaco has not responded immediately to the statements.
The focus on Monaco’s role at Microsoft demonstrates the intersection of corporate America and national security concerns under Trump’s administration, as well as continued scrutiny of former officials in high-profile positions.
