Seoul: South Korea has announced that the President of the United States, Donald Trump will be awarded the nation’s highest civilian honour, the Grand Order of Mugunghwa, during an upcoming visit to the historic city of Gyeongju.

The decision underscores the close diplomatic and strategic partnership between the two nations, which continues to play a key role in ensuring peace and stability across the Indo-Pacific region. Trump’s visit comes amid high-profile trade discussions with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The Grand Order of Mugunghwa, traditionally reserved for South Korean presidents and distinguished foreign leaders, represents a symbol of respect and enduring friendship. The presentation ceremony is expected to be held in Gyeongju, a city rich in cultural heritage and ancient royal landmarks from the Silla dynasty.

Officials have confirmed that the honour will be accompanied by a gold crown design inspired by the royal tombs of Gyeongju, signifying unity between the nations. The visit will also include cultural tours, bilateral meetings, and discussions on strengthening economic cooperation, advancing technology exchange, and enhancing regional security partnerships.

Diplomatic observers view the upcoming ceremony as a gesture reflecting South Korea’s appreciation for continued US support in defense, trade, and global diplomacy. The move also comes as both nations reaffirm their commitment to democratic principles, sustainable development, and shared prosperity.

The visit is expected to conclude with a symbolic wreath-laying at one of Gyeongju’s UNESCO World Heritage sites, marking a moment of unity and historical significance ahead of the APEC summit later this year.

The recognition is expected to set the tone for broader cooperation during upcoming regional summits, including discussions on climate resilience, supply chain security, and AI-driven innovation. Analysts have suggested that this development could further reinforce Seoul’s position as a key player in bridging dialogue between global powers.

As Gyeongju prepares to host the ceremony, the event stands as a testament to decades of partnership and shared values. It highlights how cultural respect, strategic alignment, and mutual trust continue to shape the evolving narrative of US–South Korea relations in a rapidly changing world.
