Washington: US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose new tariffs on countries that enforce digital services taxes. Trump has warned of substantial additional tariffs on exports to the US if such discriminatory legislation is not removed.
In a social media post, Trump stated that, all countries with digital taxes, legislation, rules, or regulations are on notice. Trump claimed that these taxes are designed to harm American technology companies and give a pass to firms from China, a key US tech rival. The issue of digital service taxes has been a longstanding trade irritant for multiple US administrations, particularly targeting revenues of firms like Google, Facebook, Apple, and Amazon.
This stance is not a new development. The issue of digital service taxes, particularly those levied by European nations, has been a persistent trade irritant for several US administrations. Many countries have implemented taxes on the sales revenue of major digital service providers, including Alphabet’s Google, Meta’s Facebook, Apple, and Amazon.
Earlier this year, in February, Trump had already ordered his trade chief to revive investigations aimed at imposing tariffs on imports from any country that enforces such a tax on US technology companies. President has previously directed similar threats towards specific nations, including Canada and France, over their digital tax policies.
Sources indicated that the Trump administration had also been considering imposing sanctions on European Union or member state officials responsible for implementing the bloc’s landmark Digital Services Act. This latest threat reinforces a consistent protectionist strategy, signalling a potential significant shift in US trade relations should it be acted upon.
The warning places a renewed focus on global digital taxation rules and the ongoing tensions they create in international trade diplomacy. The Trump digital tax tariffs threat represents a clear continuation of president’s adversarial trade policy, aiming to shield American tech interests from what Trump perceives as discriminatory foreign practices.
