United States: The former US President, Mr. Donald Trump, has petitioned the US Supreme Court in an attempt to overturn a Colorado decision that disqualified him from seeking the presidency there.

The highest court in Colorado declared last month that Mr. Trump was ineligible to run for office due to his involvement in a riot in the US Capitol.

A day prior, he had appealed a comparable Maine ruling. Numerous state courts have received dozens of lawsuits aimed at removing Mr. Trump from the November 2024 election ballot.

Courts in Minnesota and Michigan have rejected comparable attempts to declare the former US president ineligible.

Cases concerning the eligibility of the current Republican front-runner are still pending in other states, like Oregon.

Regarding Mr. Trump’s eligibility, a decision made by the US Supreme Court would have national legal effect. Mr. Trump was taken off the ballot in Maine and Colorado due to legal challenges claiming he incited the January 6, 2021, riot in the US Capitol.

Anyone who has “engaged in insurrection or rebellion” is prohibited from holding federal office by the US Constitution’s 14th Amendment.

The Trump campaign charged in a statement that Democratic President, Mr. Joe Biden, and the Colorado Supreme Court were “doing all they can to disenfranchise all American voters by attempting to remove President Trump.”

Campaign spokesman Mr. Steven Cheung continued, “This is an un-American, unconstitutional act of election interference which cannot stand. We urge a clear, summary rejection of the Colorado Supreme Court’s wrongful ruling and the execution of a free and fair election in November.”
