United States: Donald Trump has expressed his full support for the H-1B visa programme for foreign tech workers, backing comments made by billionaire tech CEO Elon Musk. Musk, who has become an influential figure in the Trump administration’s transition, took to social media to defend the programme, vowing to “go to war” to protect it from growing opposition among hard-right activists.
Trump, who limited the use of the visa during his first term, switched his stance in an interview. Trump called the H-1B visa programme “great,” stating that, “I have many H-1B visas on my properties. I’ve been a believer in H-1B. I have used it many times.”
The debate was ignited earlier this week when far-right commentators criticised Trump’s selection of Sriram Krishnan, an Indian American venture capitalist, as an adviser on artificial intelligence, raising concerns about the impact of immigration policy. The tension between Trump’s base and Musk heightened when former Trump ally Steve Bannon accused tech billionaires of undermining American workers by supporting H-1B.
The H-1B visa, which is critical to the U.S. tech industry, allows companies like Musk’s Tesla to hire foreign workers for skilled positions. This year alone, Tesla secured 724 of these visas. Critics claim that such programmes drive down wages for American workers, while Musk and other tech leaders argue that they are crucial to serving positions in a labour market with a shortage of qualified candidates.
As the debate over immigration continues to divide Trump’s base, the H-1B visa programme remains a key point of statement in the upcoming presidential race. Despite his tough stance on illegal immigration, Trump’s endorsement of the H-1B visa signals his support for legal immigration in the tech sector, where companies like Tesla rely heavily on skilled foreign labour.
