Taiwan: Taiwan responded swiftly to a breach of the sensitive median line in the Taiwan Strait on 11th June 2023, dispatching fighters and deploying ships and missile systems to monitor 10 Chinese warplanes that crossed the barrier. The Chinese aircraft were accompanied by four warships conducting combat patrols, marking the second instance of renewed military activity by China in less than a week. Previously, 37 Chinese military aircraft had flown into Taiwan’s air defense zone and some proceeded to the western Pacific.
China considers Taiwan its own territory and has regularly conducted air force missions near the island in recent years, albeit without entering Taiwan’s territorial airspace. The Taiwanese defense ministry reported the detection of 24 Chinese air force planes, including fighters and bombers, with 10 crossing the median line. The line has served as an unofficial boundary, but China does not recognize its significance. Additionally, four Chinese naval ships were engaged in joint combat readiness patrols, according to Taiwan’s defense ministry.
China’s defense ministry has not provided immediate comments on the recent developments. China has justified such military missions as necessary to protect its sovereignty and counter perceived collusion between Taiwan and the United States, Taiwan’s key international ally and arms supplier.
Taiwan’s government, which rejects China’s sovereignty claims, asserts that the island’s future should be determined by its people. As Taiwan gears up for presidential and parliamentary elections in January, Vice President Mr. William Lai, a candidate from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, vowed to stabilize the peaceful status quo in the Taiwan Strait if he wins the presidency.
While Taiwanese President Mr. Tsai Ing-wen has repeatedly expressed a willingness to engage in talks with China, Beijing considers her and her party as separatists and has rejected her overtures. The situation in the Taiwan Strait remains tense as China continues to flex its military muscle, and Taiwan remains vigilant in protecting its sovereignty and maintaining stability in the region.
