London: Sir Keir Starmer is set to meet with First Minister John Swinney in his inaugural visit to Scotland as Prime Minister. This marks the start of Starmer’s nationwide tour following the election victory.
The visit significantly bolsters the Labour Party representation in Scotland with 37 MPs, up from just one in 2019. After convening his initial cabinet meeting, Sir Keir announced plans to travel across all four UK nations before attending a NATO summit in Washington. Expressing his commitment to governing all corners of the UK, Sir Keir emphasized the need for a renewed approach to intergovernmental collaboration.
“For the first time in over two decades, we hold a majority in England, Scotland, and Wales, providing a clear mandate to govern across the United Kingdom,” Sir Keir stated.
“My journey starts with Scotland, followed by visits to Northern Ireland, Wales, and back to England, where I’ll engage with first ministers. Our aim is not just to address current challenges but to establish a more effective and inclusive UK-wide governance framework,” Sir Keir added.
The Prime Minister remarked about his visit that, “Not just to discuss the issues and challenges of the day, of course, we will do that, but also to establish a way of working across the United Kingdom that will be different and better to the way we’ve had in recent years and to recognise the contributions of all four nations.”
First Minister John Swinney, appreciated Sir Keir in his new role and expressed readiness to collaborate on various areas of mutual interests. Swinney highlighted the need for joint initiatives benefiting Scotland. A spokesperson for the first minister underscored the potential for constructive cooperation between the two governments to advance shared priorities and enhance outcomes for Scottish communities.
