Los Angeles: “Squid Game”, the extremely popular web series on streaming giant Netflix took home multiple honors at the Emmy Awards, with South Korean actor Mr. Lee Jung-Jae winning for best lead actor in a drama series and the show director Mr. Hwang Dong-hyuk for best director.
“Squid Game” which was also competing for the Best Drama category at the Emmy’s was Netflix’s most watched new series of all time, according to the streamer.
The show which was nominated for 14 Emmys, bagged four awards, including Guest Acting, Stunt Production Design and Visual Effects. At his address, Mr. Lee Jung-Jae applauded “the show and those involved for bringing to life so creatively a realistic issue that we all face”.
“Squid Game” tracks hundreds of cash-strapped contestants who are seen playing deadly children’s game to win cash prizes. Mr. Lee played ‘Player 456’, a penniless father who entered the game and eventually won.
Mr. Hwang Dong-hyuk, the show’s creator emphasized that this award will not be the last for outstanding director of a drama series.
“I want to thank the TV Academy for this honor and also a huge thank-you to Netflix,” the director shared in his speech and gave a shout out to Netflix boss Mr. Ted Sarandos.
Mr. Park Hae-soo and Mr. Oh Young-soo were nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category, and Ms. Jung Ho-yeon earned a nomination for Best Supporting Actress. All three were competitors in a violent, high-profile tournament in the drama.
Actor Mr. Lee won over nominees Mr. Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Soul), Mr. Jason Bateman (Ozark), Mr. Jermy Strong (Succession), Mr. Adam Scott (Severance) and Mr. Brain Cox (Succession).
