Rome: Spain and Italy have secured the top positions for organ donation rates within the European Union, according to the latest annual activity report from the National Transplant Centre.
Spain, recognized as the world leader in organ donation, boasts 48.9 donors per million population. This remarkable achievement underscores Spain’s continued commitment to organ donation and transplantation.
Italy follows with 28.2 donors per million population, positioning it as the second-highest in the EU. This information was reported by the Italian news agency ANSA.
Other notable EU countries in organ donation rates include France with 26.3 donors per million, the United Kingdom with 21.3, and Germany with 11.4. These figures highlight the varying levels of organ donation activity across Europe and the ongoing efforts to improve transplantation systems.
This achievement by Spain and Italy demonstrates the effectiveness of their respective healthcare systems in encouraging and managing organ donations, providing a model for other countries aiming to enhance their organ donation rates.
Meanwhile, according to research from the 2021 International Registry in Organ Donation and Transplantation, the UK ranked 13th with 19.8 donors per million population (PMP). The US and Spain topped the list with 41.6 PMP and 40.8 PMP, respectively. In terms of living donors, the UK was ranked 20th. Turkey and South Korea had the highest rates of living donors, with 52.6 PMP and 51 PMP, respectively.
