Seoul: South Korea is set to host an international summit focused on establishing a strategic blueprint for integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into military operations. The event will bring together defence leaders, AI experts, and industry representatives to explore cutting-edge technologies that could reshape modern warfare.

Over 90 nations, including the United States and China, have dispatched government representatives to the two-day summit in Seoul, marking the second event of its kind. The summit reflects the growing global interest in AI’s potential to enhance defence capabilities, including autonomous systems, intelligence gathering, and decision-making processes.

The South Korean government has been increasingly investing in AI-driven defence technology, viewing it as a critical component of future security strategies. The summit aims to outline concrete steps for adopting AI in various military sectors, from surveillance and reconnaissance to cyber defence and autonomous weapons systems. Experts believe AI could revolutionize how military forces operate, enabling quicker and more efficient responses to emerging threats.

South Korean Defence Minister Kim Yong-hyun said that, “Recently, in the Russia-Ukraine war, an AI-applied Ukrainian drone functioned as David’s slingshot, as AI is applied to the military domain, the military’s operational capabilities are dramatically improved. However, it is like a double-edged sword, as it can cause damage from abuse.”

However, the use of AI in military applications raises ethical and security concerns. Participants at the summit are expected to discuss the challenges of ensuring AI systems are used responsibly and safeguarded against misuse. The event is likely to include discussions on regulatory frameworks and international cooperation in the deployment of AI technologies.

South Korea’s focus on AI-driven military advancement underscores its commitment to maintaining a technological edge. The summit’s outcomes could set a precedent for AI integration in defence strategies worldwide.
