South Africa: South Africa has criticised the United States following emerging reports that the Trump administration is preparing to welcome white Afrikaners as refugees.
According to media reports, the US government has labelled the resettlement of Afrikaners as a priority under President Donald Trump. While the White House has not publicly confirmed the timing, the first group, reportedly 54 individuals, is expected to arrive at Dulles International Airport in Virginia, where a press event is scheduled.
In a strongly worded statement, South Africa’s foreign ministry condemned the proposed resettlement programme as politically motivated and aimed at undermining South Africa’s constitutional democracy. Pretoria insisted that accusations of racial discrimination against the white minority in South Africa were baseless, citing national crime statistics that show no targeted attacks against specific racial groups on farms.

The controversy stems from a February executive order by Trump that described Afrikaners as victims of racial discrimination, thereby opening a pathway for potential refugee resettlement in the US.
While South African authorities said they would not prevent those selected from leaving, they emphasised the need for proper vetting and confirmation that no candidates had outstanding criminal charges.
The US State Department confirmed it is conducting interviews with potential resettlers, focusing on Afrikaners in South Africa who are victims of unjust racial discrimination. However, no specific date has been given for the programme’s official start.
The Trump administration has previously accused South Africa of forcefully seizing land from white farmers without compensation, a claim the South African government has repeatedly denied.
Adding fuel to the diplomatic tension, Elon Musk, a senior Trump adviser and South African-born entrepreneur, has been outspoken against the Pretoria government, alleging it is overseeing a genocide of white farmers.
The move by Washington has also drawn criticism for its contrast with broader US immigration policies. While prioritising white Afrikaners, the administration has placed sweeping restrictions on asylum claims from other global regions.
In its February response to the executive order, the South African government remarked that it was ironic for the US to welcome a group that remains amongst the most economically privileged while refusing entry to refugees in greater need elsewhere.
