Solomon Islands: The Solomon Islands’ legislators have chosen Jeremiah Manele, a former foreign minister, to be their new prime minister.
In a secret ballot on Thursday, Manele, who has promised to uphold the Pacific nation’s China-friendly foreign policy, received 31 votes. Longtime opposition leader Matthew Wale, his opponent, received eighteen votes.
To prevent any violence, there was increased security throughout the 50-member parliament vote in Honiara, the nation’s capital, with police squadrons circling the parliamentary grounds.
Speaking outside the parliament, Manele commended the absence of previous acts of violence. He declared, “The people have spoken.” “Today, we have demonstrated to the world that we are superior to that,” Manele added.
Manele’s appointment follows a nationwide election held last month in which no political party was able to secure a majority. Before Thursday’s vote on the prime minister, the two factions had lobbied to win over independent members of the 50-member house.
Because of the possible impact on regional security following the signing of a security treaty with China in 2022 by outgoing Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare, China, the United States, and neighboring Australia are all closely monitoring the election.
During his five years in charge, Sogavare forged strong ties with Beijing. He did not run for the top political position again, and his party supported Manele. When the Solomon Islands retreated from Taiwan and established diplomatic ties with Beijing in 2019, the politician held the position of foreign minister.
With a platform to build the infrastructure of the island nation, Manele’s OUR party secured 15 seats and added four more seats in a reorganized alliance with two microparties. Independents have to back it to get the 26 seats required for a majority. 49 votes were cast overall, and one lawmaker did not show up.
