United States: United Kingdom Prime Minister Mr. Rishi Sunak and US President Mr. Joe Biden have jointly announced a transatlantic cooperation agreement, solidifying the UK’s position within the US administration’s economic sphere and signalling a renewed alliance following the challenges posed by Brexit.

The deal, known as the “Atlantic Declaration,” was unveiled during a press conference at the White House. Mr. Sunak emphasised that the strengthened ties between the two countries aim to enhance economic security, primarily in response to the threats posed by China and Russia.

The Prime Minister highlighted the willingness of these countries to exploit openness, engage in intellectual property theft, abuse technology for authoritarian purposes, and manipulate vital resources.

While the declaration, published at the conclusion of Sunak’s visit to Washington, is characterized by a series of economic mini-deals, specific details are limited, and no comprehensive assessment of the overall economic benefit has been provided.

Additionally, the announcement effectively ends any hope of a full trade deal with the US, a key pledge made in the Conservative Party’s 2019 manifesto.

When questioned about the absence of a broader trade agreement, Mr. Sunak assured that the Atlantic Declaration would still bring benefits to UK companies and address the current and future challenges faced by the nation.

However, Labour’s shadow foreign secretary Mr. David Lammy criticises Mr. Sunak, saying the government has left “Britain’s cupboards bare” by not securing a trade deal.

“This statement shows the government has failed to deliver the comprehensive trade deal they promised in the 2019 manifesto or to secure the ally status under the Inflation Reduction Act that is so important,” Mr. Lammy commented.

Mr. Biden, on the other hand, expressed satisfaction with the “special relationship” between the UK and the US, highlighting their collaboration in supporting Ukraine. He emphasised their joint efforts to provide economic aid, humanitarian assistance, and security systems to Ukraine in its struggle against Russia’s brutal invasion.

The transatlantic cooperation deal represents a significant development in UK-US relations, solidifying their ties amidst shared challenges from China and Russia. Although criticism has emerged regarding the absence of a comprehensive trade agreement, the focus on economic security and mutual protectionism reflects the evolving priorities of both nations. The alliance’s strength is further demonstrated through joint efforts to support Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.
