Wisconsin, United States: Republican Liz Cheney has campaigned for Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris in Wisconsin, reaching out to voters to leave former President Donald Trump and instead back Harris in the approaching election.
Republican Liz Cheney has a lifelong conventional and former Wyoming congresswoman, expressed her full support for Harris during a rally in Ripon, the birthplace of the Republican Party. Liz Cheney stated that, “I’ve never voted for a Democrat, but this year I’m proudly tossing my vote for Vice President Kamala Harris. Putting patriotism ahead of partisanship is not an aspiration. It is our duty.”
Liz Cheney’s remarks were a sharp denunciation of Trump, whom Cheney accused of attempting to damage the foundations of American democracy following his 2020 election defeat. Cheney remarked that, “Our republic meets a threat unlike any we have faced before a former president who attempted to stay in power by unravelling the foundations of our Republic.”
Cheney’s appearance with Harris is characteristic of a broader push to build bipartisan support against Trump, the de facto leader of the Republican Party, as he encounters multiple federal charges related to election interference.
The former congresswoman has been one of Trump’s most vocal critics within the GOP, a perspective that cost her politically when she lost her primary in 2022 to a Trump-backed challenger. Despite this, Cheney has stayed steadfast in her opposition to Trump, warning of the dangers she believes he poses to the country.
In her speech, Cheney praised Harris’s dedication to public service and dedication to the Constitution. Cheney said that, “Vice President Harris has devoted her life to public service. I know she loves our country, and I know she will be a president for all Americans.” She urges voters to help elect Harris and “reject the depraved cruelty of Donald Trump.”
Harris, who thanked Cheney for her support, praised the former congresswoman’s courage and called her a leader in the “finest tradition” of the Republican Party. Harris conveyed that, “She possesses some of the qualities of character I most respect in any individual and any leader – courage, especially at a moment like this.”
Cheney’s acceptance follows a recent statement in which she and her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, committed their support for Harris over Trump. Both have emphasised their concerns about Trump’s attempts to undermine democracy and the rule of law.
With Wisconsin being a critical battlefield state in the 2024 election, the Harris-Cheney event underscored the importance of building cross-party coalitions to challenge Trump’s influence and secure key electoral conquests.
No immediate response has come from Trump regarding Cheney’s endorsement. However, with election day approaching, the growing coalition against him signals an intensifying fight for the future of American democracy.
