Lebanon: Palestinian-American Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib has condemned a cartoon presented by National Review, which describes a racist attack against Arab and Muslim communities.
The cartoon depicted Tlaib holding an igniting pager, with resemblance to recent explosions of communication devices in Lebanon. The attacks, which happened earlier in the week, have been attributed to Israel and resulted in the passing away of at least 37 people, with nearly 3,000 others injured.
Tlaib expressed her disgrace in a statement, warning that such depictions incite further hatred and violence against already vulnerable Arab and Muslim populations. Tlaib expressed that, “Our community is already in so much pain right now. This racism will stir up more hate and violence against our Arab & Muslim communities, and it makes everyone less safe.”
The cartoon speaks briefly of a wave of attacks in Lebanon, during which pagers and walkie-talkies exploded, resulting in civilian casualties. Tlaib, alongside fellow Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, has described these attacks as a violation of international humanitarian law, a sentiment shared by many in the international community.
Tlaib has often been the target of harsh criticism from Republican and some Democratic lawmakers, who were prosecuted for her being overly sympathetic to Hamas and anti-Israel sentiments.
As ongoing violence continues in Gaza, Tlaib has been an outspoken advocate for the Palestinian cause, criticising her colleagues for their silence surrounding escalating bloodshed. She particularly condemned the use of U.S.-funded weapons in the conflict, stating that the current atrocities represent some of the worst documented crimes against humanity.
The ongoing war in Gaza, marked by severe civilian casualties and growing global outcry, remains a breaking point of controversy in U.S. politics, where divisions over support for Israel are increasingly sharp. Tlaib continues to advocate for peace and justice for Palestinians while pushing back against what she views as a racist.
