Peru: Peru has ordered the Mexican ambassador Mr. Pablo Monroy to leave the country within 72 hours in the latest escalation of tensions between the two nations after Peru ousted Mr. Pedro Castillo as president.

Peru’s foreign ministry declared in its social media accounts that it was expelling Mr. Monroy “because of the repeated statements by that country’s highest authorities about the political situation in Peru.”

The  government’s decision came hours after Mexico’s top diplomat announced that his country had granted asylum to the family of Mr. Castillo, who faces rebellion charges from behind bars after attempting a coup.

Mr. Castillo was removed from office earlier after he tried to dissolve Congress. The ousted president is being investigated in Peru on charges of rebellion and conspiracy.

Mexico has been supporting Mr. Castillo and stated early that the country was considering granting asylum to the ousted president.

In addition, the Mexican President Mr. Andrs Menuel Lopez Obrador called the removal of Mr. Castillo undemocratic. Recently, Mexican Foreign Minister Mr. Marcelo Ebrard declared that the government was negotiating safe passage for Mr. Castillo’s family, who were inside Mexico’s embassy in Lima, Peru.

The Peruvian government is deeply provoked by Mexico’s decision to grant asylum to Mr. Castillo’s family, and the government declared the Mexican Ambassador “persona non grata.”

Peruvian opposition legislator Ms. Maria del Carmen Alva accused Mexico by remarking that the country is “sheltering the corrupt”.

Mr. Castillo will remain locked up in pretrial detention for more than a year after a judicial panel approved prosecutors’ request for the extension while they investigate the rebellion and conspiracy charges against the former president.
