Canada: OceanGate, the company responsible for the ill-fated submersible dive to the wreckage of the Titanic, has announced the suspension of all its exploration and commercial operations.
The decision comes after the tragic implosion of the company’s Titan submersible during the dive, resulting in the loss of all five individuals on board, including OceanGate’s CEO, Mr. Stockton Rush. While no further details were provided regarding the suspension, an advertisement for a Titanic expedition can still be seen on the company’s website.
Since the incident, OceanGate has faced scrutiny regarding its safety practices and submersible designs. Critics have accused the company of prioritizing innovation and cost-cutting over stringent safety measures. Reports revealed that the submersible was constructed using carbon fibre acquired from Boeing at a discounted price due to its expired shelf life. This material was deemed unsuitable for withstanding the immense water pressure of the ocean depths by renowned deep-sea researcher and Titanic film director, Mr. James Cameron.
Concerns about the submersible’s safety had been raised previously by experts in the field, who warned that the experimental nature of the design required proper certification before carrying passengers. Despite these concerns, OceanGate defended its practices, stating that Rush was risk-averse and dedicated to safety. However, the incident prompted regulatory authorities in the US and Canada to initiate investigations into the cause of the implosion.
Last week, the US Coast Guard recovered potential human remains and debris from the wreckage of the Titan submersible. The search and rescue efforts commenced on 18th June 2023 when the submersible initially went missing. It was later determined that the vessel had experienced a catastrophic implosion on the same day. Portions of the submersible were found approximately 1,600 feet from the bow of the Titanic.
OceanGate’s decision to suspend operations underscores the gravity of the incident and the need for a thorough investigation into the causes behind the submersible’s failure.
