United States: Men’s tennis world number one, Mr. Novak Djokovic, will be able to participate in the US Open in 2023, as the United States government has announced its plans to end the COVID-19 vaccination requirements for international travelers on May 11.
The White House has stated that the requirements will come to an end when the coronavirus public health emergency ends next week.
Mr. Djokovic, who is one of the most high-profile athletes who has not been vaccinated against COVID-19, was unable to play at the US Open in 2022 due to his vaccination status. The 35-year-old Serb had unsuccessfully applied to the US government for special permission to play at the Masters tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami earlier in 2023.
Mr. Djokovic missed 2022 Australian Open and was deported from the country due to his vaccination status. The world number one player has previously stated that he would rather skip grand slams than receive a COVID shot. However, with the easing of restrictions by the Australian government later in 2022, the Serbian Player was able to participate in and win the 2023 edition of the tournament in Melbourne, equaling Mr. Rafael Nadal’s record of 22 men’s grand slam titles.
In April 2020, he issued a statement saying: “Personally I am opposed to the vaccination against COVID-19 in order to be able to travel. But if it becomes compulsory, I will have to make a decision whether to do it or not.”
Mr. Djokovic has won three of his 22 major titles at the US Open. The 2023 tournament will be held from August 28 to September 10.
