Ireland: The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) has announced that DUP chief Jeffrey Donaldson, resigned after confirming he faces ‘allegations of a historic nature.’
The DUP, Northern Ireland’s largest unionist party, stated that, “In accordance with the party rules, the party officers have suspended Mr Donaldson from membership, pending the outcome of a judicial process.” The party also stated that its officials communally selected Gavin Robinson, another DUP legislator in the United Kingdom’s parliament, as acting party chief.
In addition to the DUP not pinpointing the reason for Donaldson’s resignation, several reports are coming out that his quitting was related to a report from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) noting two arrests.
The PSNI remarked that, “A 61-year-old man has been charged in relation to non-recent sexual offences. A 57-year-old woman was also arrested and charged at the time for aiding and abetting additional offences. Both are due to appear before Newry Magistrates’ Court on 24 April.”
Amid a difficult period for the Democratic Unionist Party, its leader stepping down from the post is a crucial moment. The party is working to determine its ties with the United Kingdom, which is anticipated to hold general elections later this year. The DUP expected Jeffrey Donaldson to lead the party in the upcoming UK general election after he negotiated a deal with the UK government to end its two-year boycott of Stormont.
Donaldson is a prominent politician in the British region and Northern Ireland’s longest-serving lawmaker in the British parliament since his election in 1997. He is also a former member of the Northern Irish Assembly.
Following his unexpected resignation, Northern Ireland First Minister, Michelle O’Neill, stated that the power-sharing government is dedicated to implementing its policy initiatives. O’Neill’s Irish nationalist party, Sinn Féin, is bound to share power with the DUP.
“My priority is to continue to provide the leadership the public expects and deserves and to ensure the four-party executive coalition delivers for the whole of our community now and in the future. The DUP leader has resigned after being charged with serious offences. This is now a matter for the criminal justice system,” O’Neill added.
