North Korea’s balloons and GPS interference threaten airspace

The aviation industry worries about worsening airspace safety due to North Korea's actions, like a trash balloon campaign and missile launches, challenging airlines.

South Korea: The recent developments in South Korean airspace have raised significant concerns among aviation experts amidst escalating tension between North and South Korea.

A series of provocative actions by North Korea, including the trash balloon campaign and increased missile launches, are creating operational challenges for airlines.

Since late May, North Korea has initiated several waves of launching balloons filled with trash and even human excrement into South Korean airspace. This unconventional tactic, described as psychological warfare by analysts, reached a peak on June 27 when one balloon landed on a runway at Incheon International Airport. The incident led to a temporary suspension of airport operations for three hours, affecting both take-off and landing of flights.

Simultaneously, North Korea has also heightened its interference with aviation navigation systems, notably through GPS ‘spoofing,’ where false signals mislead GPS receivers. This interference poses serious safety risks to commercial aircraft, potentially causing them to deviate from their intended flight paths, and accidentally enter North Korean airspace.

The aviation industry has expressed growing concern over the deteriorating airspace safety. In response, South Korea’s transport ministry has assured of continuous vigilance and surveillance by its military and air traffic control. They are actively monitoring and responding to these provocations.

Korean Air Lines, a major carrier in the region, has adjusted its flight procedures to mitigate the hazards posed by the balloon campaign and GPS spoofing. This includes adding extra fuel to flights when northerly winds are expected, allowing aircraft flexibility to remain airborne longer or divert to alternative airports if necessary.

The disruption caused by these activities has prompted South Korea to complain with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), urging North Korea to cease these provocative actions immediately. The situation remains vigilant as both military and diplomatic efforts are underway to address the escalating tensions and ensure the safety of airspace over the Korean Peninsula.
