United States: North Korea has not reacted to the unusual entry of a United States soldier into its territory. The soldier has crossed the heavily fortified border that separates South and North Korea, but North Korean authorities have yet to comment on the incident.

North Korea has remained silent concerning the situation of US Private 2nd Class Mr. Travis King, who voluntarily defected to North Korea while visiting the border village of Panmunjom on 18th July 2023. No official information has been released by North Korean authorities regarding his fate. US Defence Secretary Mr. Lloyd Austin has confirmed that an active US service member willfully crossed the inter-Korean border into North Korea without authorization.

“We are very early in this event, and so there’s a lot that we are still trying to learn, but what we do know is that one of our service members who was on a tour wilfully and without authorization crossed the military demarcation line,” Mr. Austin remarked.

“We are closely monitoring and investigating the situation, working to notify the soldier’s next of kin, and engaging to address this incident,” the US Defence Secretary said.

North Korea has launched two short-range ballistic missiles towards the eastern sea. However, the recent missile launch was not deemed to be connected to the US soldier’s crossing of the border. The two events were regarded as separate incidents by authorities and analysts. The missile launch was more likely related to the arrival of a US nuclear-armed submarine in the country’s port city of Busan, as per the statement.
