United States: Netflix has revealed that it will reopen the iconic Egyptian Theatre to mark its 101st anniversary of opening. The theatre will reopen with a screening of The Killer, followed by a question and answer section with its director David Fincher.
The streaming giant is also planning to use the location as a venue for premieres and events. Netflix said that “the one-of-a-kind venue is now ready to return as a must-visit landmark for local film lovers and visitors from around the world.”
The reopening on November 9, 2023, is the result of a three-year partnership with Netflix and the American Cinematheque, dedicated to the restoration of the Egyptian Theatre.
The Egyptian Theatre was originally built in 1922 during the silent film era. This place is the home of the first Hollywood movie premiere, Robin Hood, and the birthplace of the red carpet, as per the statement.
As part of the reopening, Netflix will also release a documentary short film, Temple of Film: 100 Years of the Egyptian Theatre.
Netflix will programme the theatre Monday through Thursday with theatrical engagements, retrospectives, special screenings, and events. The American Cinematheque will continue to independently programme on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
The Netflix CEO, Ted Sarandos, said ahead of the reopening that the restoration of the Egyptian was a way for the leaders of Netflix, who are still relative newcomers in Hollywood history, to show that “we do love this history.”
“It’s important to give back to the industry that’s given so much to us,” Sarandos added, calling Egyptian Theatre Hollywood’s “temples of storytelling.”
