Ukraine: The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has reported that Russian troops have installed mines at a nuclear station in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia Oblast, an area under occupation. This action, directly contradicting IAEA safety standards, has raised global concerns, particularly from IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi.
In response to the escalating situation, the United States has advised Kyiv to adopt a ‘more conservative approach’ towards the Russian invasion, instead of initiating new ground offensives to reclaim territory. A Western official involved in Ukraine policy suggested that both sides are unlikely to make significant operational breakthroughs in 2024. They recommended an ‘active defence’ strategy for Ukraine, enabling them to fortify their forces and prepare for potential future engagements.
This advice aligns with the strategy reportedly promoted by the Biden administration, which encourages Ukraine to focus on defending its current territory, strengthening its positions, and augmenting supplies and forces over the upcoming months.
In a parallel development, France has intensified its support for Ukraine. French Defence Minister Sébastien Lecornu, in an interview with Le Parisien, indicated a shift away from supplying Ukraine with existing military stocks. Instead, French defence industries, like Nexter which produces the Caesar self-propelled 155 mm howitzer, are now directly equipping the Ukrainian army, having notably reduced manufacturing times for certain weapons systems.
Amid these developments, NATO is set to commence its largest military exercises in decades. Approximately 90,000 personnel will participate in these months-long wargames, designed to demonstrate the alliance’s capability to defend its territory up to the border with Russia.
These exercises are a show of strength and preparedness in the context of Russia’s ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has seen NATO bolstering its eastern flank since early 2022, although the alliance itself is not directly involved in the conflict beyond providing non-lethal support to Kyiv.
