Montana, US: Montana is poised to become the first state in the United States to enforce a ban on TikTok, the Chinese-owned media giant, across personal devices.
As concerns over potential foreign influence intensify, Montana takes a firm stance, blazing a trail for other states to follow. Governor Mr. Greg Gianforte officially approved and signed the ban into law. The implementation of this ban is scheduled to come into effect on 1st January 2023.
Authorities worldwide have intensified their scrutiny of TikTok, raising concerns about the potential transfer of user data to the Chinese government. The popular social media platform has faced mounting allegations regarding data privacy, leading to increased scrutiny and calls for stricter regulations to safeguard user information.
Montana lawmakers successfully passed a bill last month, with a vote of 54 to 43, that prohibits the use of TikTok on personal devices. This legislative decision highlights the growing concerns surrounding the popular social media platform’s presence and its potential implications for data privacy and national security.
Owned by Chinese company ByteDance, TikTok faced a thorough inquiry in March as the congressional committee grilled its chief executive, Mr. Shou Zi Chew. Questions centered around the potential access of user data by the Chinese government and the level of influence they might exert on the app’s content visible to American users. The inquiry shed light on mounting concerns regarding data security and foreign influence within the realm of popular social media platforms.
In March 2023, the US government issued a demand to ByteDance, the owner of TikTok, stating that the company must sell the app or face the possibility of a ban in the country. While individual users are not subject to penalties, companies that violate the ban could face fines of up to $10,000, enforced by Montana’s Department of Justice.
This means that tech giants like Apple and Google could potentially be fined if they continue to make TikTok available for download in Montana through their app stores. ByteDance has consistently denied allegations of Chinese government control over its operations.
