India: India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has hailed a “mega partnership” with the United States following a high-profile meeting with US President Donald Trump, where both leaders decided on new energy and defence trade deals. The visit comes with rising tensions over tariffs and trade barriers between the two nations.

During a joint press conference, Modi declared India’s plans to increase imports of American oil and gas, calling the agreement a “win-win” for both economies. Trump echoed this sentiment, highlighting that the deal would help close the US trade deficit with India.

Trump stated that, “They need it. And we have it,” underscoring America’s role as a key energy supplier. In addition to energy agreements, Trump announced that India would ramp up its purchase of US military hardware, including plans to eventually acquire F-35 fighter jets. The move aligns with India’s broader strategy to update its defence capabilities while strengthening ties with Washington.

However, trade tensions remain a sticking point. Trump blamed India for its high trade tariffs, describing them as a “big problem” and reiterating his push for “reciprocal tariffs” on US trading partners. India, in response, signalled a willingness to reduce tariffs on certain American goods and repatriate undocumented Indian nationals living in the US.

On the immigration front, Modi thanked Trump for approving the extradition of a suspect linked to the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. Meanwhile, the US has deported over 100 Indian nationals accused of illegal immigration, with more expected to follow.

As trade negotiations unfold, anxieties persist over India’s ability to balance its trade deficit, particularly with the rising cost of US oil and gas due to a stronger dollar. Experts warn that reciprocal tariffs on Indian exports could be forthcoming, adding further pause to the economic relationship.

Shortly before meeting Modi, Trump instructed his advisers to calculate broad new tariffs on global trading partners, warning that they could take effect by April 1. He defended the move as required to bolster American manufacturing, despite concerns about potential economic fallout.

Trump remarked that, “Our allies are worse than our enemies when it comes to import taxes,” reiterating his long-standing criticism of international trade policies. With tariffs looming and negotiations ongoing, both nations face the challenge of navigating an increasingly complex economic partnership while maintaining diplomatic goodwill.
