United Kingdom: The UK Ministry of Defence has experienced a major data breach, resulting in the hacking of personal information belonging to UK military personnel.
The hack targeted a third-party payroll system used by the MoD that contains the bank account information and names of both former and current members of the armed services. It’s also possible that a very small number of addresses were accessed.
With prompt action, the department disconnected the contractor-run external network.
As a precaution, affected service staff will be notified and given expert guidance. To find out if their information is being used or if there is an effort to use it, they can contact a personal data protection service.
All salaries were paid at the last payday, and nothing unusual is anticipated for the one that comes at the end of this month. However, in a few instances, there might be a tiny delay in the payment of costs.
The shadow defence secretary, John Healey, said that, “So many serious questions for the defence secretary on this, especially from forces personnel whose details were targeted. Any such hostile action is utterly unacceptable.”
After learning about the incident a few days ago, the MoD has been attempting to determine its scope and effects. In an unprecedented coordinated effort to expose Beijing’s spying, the US and the UK accused China in March of conducting a global campaign of “malicious” cyberattacks.
