United States: Tens of millions of voters have cast their ballots in one of the closest and most consequential U.S. elections in recent history. Both Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump were locked in a high-stakes, razor-thin fight as polls remained tight across several crucial battleground states.

Trump took an early win in Florida, a state Republicans fought to keep after recent conservative shifts. Democrats had hoped to make the state competitive, and the Associated Press proved Trump’s lead there by 13 points, marking a significant win for his campaign.

Voters also weighed in on critical ballot measures, with Florida rejecting a proposed amendment to safeguard abortion rights in the state constitution. This measure, a Democratic-backed initiative intended to drive turnout, fell short of the 60% threshold, signalling a setback for reproductive rights advocates.

In the presidential contest, three critical battleground states — Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin — were still too close to call as polls closed. Exit polls indicated a mix of top considerations, with four in ten voters highlighting the economy and jobs while about half expressed worries over the future of American democracy.

Harris, who could become the first woman and first Black and South Asian American president, highlighted democratic values in her campaign, countering Trump’s messages on immigration and border security. Meanwhile, Trump drew large crowds with his populist rhetoric, pledging to address immigration through stricter border policies and broad deportations and to overhaul the federal workforce.

Adding to the election’s stakes, all House seats and 34 Senate seats were up for grabs. Voting generally proceeded smoothly, though scattered reports of technical issues and long wait times emerged nationwide. The results are anticipated to take days, leaving Americans and international observers on edge as the count continues.

This election comes across rising concerns of unrest, particularly as the results from pivotal states remain unknown. For many, the election marked a choice between two sharply different visions for America, with both sides anxiously awaiting a verdict that could reshape the country’s future.
